Review of The Exorcist (1973) by Chris G — 17 Dec 2012
Despite all the main scares being well known now even to people who've never seen it, the film retains a real sense of dread, probably helped by the fact that I only ever watched it once before, about ten years ago.
More documentary-like than any amount of modern shaky-cam could achieve and effective use of both subtle and not so subtle SFX. The medical examinations are nearly as grim as the possession scenes and in fact there may be some message here about science vs religion although it wasn't made explicit.
Builds slowly and thrusts disturbing scenes on you without warning or cheesey build up - all adding to the realism, although you could criticise it for being confusing.
