Review of The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) by Alexander J — 29 Oct 2009
In general, this is a very well-done film. The acting cast is very supportive, and the movie itself focuses on the creep factor rather than on cheap violence.
For starters, let's take a look at the film title: "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." This title could be taken in any way if one had not seen this film prior. One could take it as a meaning of another violent horror movie with terrorizing gore, or as a Law-N-Order wannabe masterpiece.
However, we must all keep in mind this: MOVIE TITLES DON'T TELL YOU ANYTHING IN THEM! Take that into mind, and watch this theater masterpiece with a neutral mind prepared to expect the unexpected.
The story plot is actually what's in the movie's name: "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." Buuuuuuuuuut... lolz, the exorcism is not part of the majority of the movie. The majority of this loosely-based cinematic work hinders the exorcism as best as it can, and moves toward the drama behind it.
What does this mean? That means this: if you are a person who wants to watch violence NOW and QUICK, then your party is busted man! Haters of the classic "Gone with the Wind" will probably not like this wonderful and visual work of thearatical art, which is a huge shame.
Pardon my use of obvious sarcasm, but I dearly do not understand the type of movie-goers who would rather watch immediate blood-staining violence than to watch a true effort in our movie-going world.
Take a look at the Discovery show series "A Haunting." It doesn't have very much violence in any shape or form, but does that make the series unwatcheable and boring? Watch it off Youtube if you don't know what I mean, it's a good paranormal documentary source.
Anyways, back to my original review. As stated earlier, the supporting acting cast does an excellent job. Also, the music soundtrack is awesome; I'd buy a copy of it off of Amazon for a good price!
As far as scare tactics go, they are far, FAR from kindergarten scare tactics (as some OTHER RT critics claim them to be). There are plenty of frightning moments that come during the entertainment values. Sure, it may not seem scary at first. Then during the rest of the film, you will be ready to cover your eyes! O_O.
For example, Emily Rose herself goes through countless stages of her frightening posession. She bends her body in abnormal manners, changes demon faces, suddenly speaks Latin in yelling ramble,... she is just a nutcase!
As for the graphics, they look pretty good actually. Sometimes a horror film gets ruined because of extensive use of CGI, but that is not the case here. All of it gets as real as it could possibly get.
In conclusion, this film is a classic piece of the horror genre. I highly recommend it.
My Rating: 8.3 Hairlocks out of 10 (GREAT).
