Review of The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) by Junelkean — 04 Jul 2017
“The Exorcist” is highly regarded as a classic horror flick dealing with demonic possessions. And “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” likely takes that premise into a new angle of the horror genre.
The story is based from the true events of a teenage girl named Emily (Carpenter) who dies horribly after suffering from a condition that cannot be explained by science alone. Laura Linney plays a lawyer to defend the priest (Wilkinson) who is wrongly prosecuted due to the murder of the girl.
The straightforward story makes it interesting enough from the stage of events happened in the film. It manages to combine legal drama and suspense with mostly great performances from the cast, specifically Linney, Wilkinson and Carpenter. Most importantly, Scott Derrickson's strong direction brings a lot of impact to the sequence of events to let the audience figure out the possibilities that may happen.
Nevertheless, the movie becomes overlong taking almost two hours to finally end. Some of the audience would also get disappointed if they are expecting this to be a completely horror film.
VERDICT: Despite of its long duration, this suspense movie is well-told with a disturbing performance from Carpenter.
