Review of The Ex (2006) by Dallas T — 18 Dec 2008

It's quite a reasonable comedy. There's very little wrong with it. The one problem I did have with it was the lack of likable characters. "The ex" in question (played by Bateman) is an unpleasant character - that's kind of part of the plot - fair enough.

Tom (played by Braff) in contrast is very likeable - much as you've seen him Scrubs. That's two out of three of the main characters. Tom's wife, Sofia (played by Peet) unfortunately spends much of the film being moody and unreasonable.

She's quite sweet occassionally, but for the most part, she's a walking demonstration of poor relational skills. So what you get is a very likeable character getting rather a hard time from the other two main characters in the film.

For me, this cast just a little too much gloom over the whole affair - it's a comedy afterall. Aside from that, it's fine and you could do a lot worse.
