Review of The Evil Dead (1981) by Richard C — 10 Aug 2012
Tonight I was cinematically blessed when I got to see The Evil Dead, a 35 mm print on the big screen. Growing up I was always a big fan of the sequel and although I still found the original to be a solid piece of entertainment the sequel which was really a remake seemt so much cooler.
Now looking back at it with a fresh view I can appreciate the film more especially after having seen so many others. I believe the second one is still my favorite and one of my favorite films in general but the original has so much to offer.
For instance the camera work is just stunning. And although the lighting can be way overdone at times there are moments when it's fantastic. That goes for the score and sound effects as well. The spfx are of course outdated but at least they are not digital.
The effort which was alot is clearly appreciated and despite the now hokey moments and possible horror cliches it helped to create the film manages to even be a little creepy and scary amidst the chuckling.
And for his first film it's a hell of a debut and proof of his talent that he's come to develop and refine even if he's sold out a little. Also it's always welcome to see the charasmatic Bruce Campbell especially in his early days and so ruggedly handsome and fresh faced.
