Review of The Evil Dead (1981) by Tanner R — 17 Apr 2015
In my opinion, this is the greatest horror film ever made. I don't think it's scary, but I don't judge horror movies based on that because, even though I love horror, it doesn't scare me.
The Exorcist and Halloween don't scare me. I think this is the best because of Sam Raimi's brilliant camera work, all the iconic shots, Bruce Campbell's animated performance that I can only compare to a less goofy version of Charlie Chaplin, and the pacing.
One time on TNT's MonsterVision, Joe Bob Briggs said Sam Raimi told him the reason for the movies kinetic pacing is because it was made for the Drive-In theater. Raimi knew when a movie slows down people in Drive-Ins start making out or talking or beeping their horns, so he made it so every frame grabs your attention.
The movie is so wild it's like something H.P. Lovecraft would have made. But it never goes too far because the innovative camera work earns your respect and wonder. It's why all Evil Dead clones have failed.
The camera work and the look of the film is so brilliant you could pause at any point in the movie and you're guaranteed to have a cool image for a poster.
