Review of The Entity (1982) by Vanessa H — 30 Mar 2014
A shaky third act featuring some howlingly cheesy dialogue slightly hampers an otherwise solid thinking adult's horror film. Of course, the strong performances by Barbara Hershey and the late Ron Silver help tremendously.
Hershey plays a single mom who suddenly begins to experience brutal sexual attacks at the hands of an invisible presence. It could be a figment of her imagination, or it could be a field of hostile energy, or it could be a demon.
Based on true events (so they say), this is one of the better horror films of the 1980s, a decade that wasn't terribly kind to the genre. Feminists protested it on release, but they may have missed the boat there, since the film definitely doesn't eroticize rape, and none of the men in the film come off particularly well.
Worth a look if you can handle the admittedly unpleasant subject matter.
