Review of The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain (1995) by Christine S — 22 Jun 2008
A throwback to the old Ealing comedies that came out of Britain in the 1950s. This became a bit of an unexpected hit on cable TV and VHS back in 1995-96 due to the success of 4 WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL (1995).
Colm Meaney (of STAR TREK NG and STAR TREK DEEP SPACE 9 fame) is very good as Morgan the Goat, the local barkeep; Hugh Grant simply plays his standard blustering devilishly handsome character who is akward around women (so they naturally fall for him) but in 1995, no one played Hugh Grant quite as well as High Grant! Instead of a bunch of eccentric friends (who surrounded Grant in 4 WEDDINGS) Grant has to cope with a village of eccentric Welshmen who regard this Englishman as an outsider.
It is a gentle comedy, not for everyone's taste.
