Review of The End of the Tour (2015) by Anthony B — 07 Aug 2015
How often do I leave a movie feeling satisfied? Not very often, but I'm happy to report "The End of the Tour" was one such experience. Based on a true story, Rolling Stone journalist David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) spends five days interviewing author David Foster Wallace (Jason Siegel) following publication of Wallace's breakout novel Infinite Jest.
Pulitzer prizewinning playwright David Marguiles crafted the screenplay from Lipsky's memoir based on what Time called "transcripts of their brilliant conversations [that] read like a two-man Tom Stoppard play.
" Handicapped by the constraints of time and having every word recorded, Wallace and Lipsky's relationship develops in interesting and unexpected ways, with, at one point, Lipsky becoming interviewee.
The film touches on many issues, including media intrusiveness and the invasion of privacy. At the end of the day "The End of the Tour" deserves a place on your Oscar watch list.
