Review of The End of the Tour (2015) by Grant T — 23 Aug 2015
I know little of David Forster Wallace's philosophy or his literary work. Specifically I have not read his Infinite Jest. Hence I am ill-prepared for the existential angsts exhibited in Wallace. Was he faking a certain performance - a good guy, a self-deprecating genius who has significant difficulties in common situations - or he is just so.
This movie is a rumbling tumble of conversations, small scenarios, embarrassment and ticks, of both writers. It is meant to be a journey of heart and mind shared by two writers, yet maybe it is the gap of generational incomprehension, I felt no philosophic gravitas nor angst other than the usual discontent against both the world and self.
