Review of The End of the Affair (1999) by Abigail O — 16 Mar 2008
One I can watch over and over. The music is superb and evocative and the rainy, wartime London location was credible without overshadowing the subtle romance. Ralph Fiennes is excellent as the romantic lead, who inexplicably loses his lover without explanation until the story gets explained through her eyes.
I didn't mind Julianne Moore playing English, she was convincing enough not to make me notice. Based on an excellent book, it is one of those very few films that plays character conflict over religion in a way that is compelling and sympathetic.
Ah, I wish I could write like Graham Greene!
