Review of The End of the Affair (1999) by Matt G — 02 Aug 2008
Neil Jordan once again proves he is a filmmaker who can truly tell a great affecting story. He is also a filmmaker that from this film and Interview with the Vampire, he shows that he quite adequately adapt a classic novel to film.
That is a trait that even some of the best of filmmakers fail at and Jordan seems more than capable at the task. While he is a filmmaker with flaws; he is a director who can bring the right pieces together to tell an effective story that sticks with you after the film is done.
He succeeds again in the same areas with this film. With great cinematography that gives perfect atmosphere, as well as properly enhances the story without overpowering it. The high caliber writing on Jordan's part and the pitch perfect acting from the leads to the supporting actors makes this a high quality film that deserves all praise it receives.
It is a thought-provoking look at the issues of love, hate, faith, and God that truly impressed me, much like Interview with the Vampire. Finally and maybe most importantly, Neil Jordan's good film made me want to do what all good film adaptations do, make me the viewer want to check out the original source material.
I think this is a film that Graham Greene would be happy to see.
