Review of The Emperor's New Groove (2000) by Mateo T — 04 Sep 2014
One of the most clever, irreverent buddy comedies in the las two decades comes in the form of a Disney animated film that is smarter than it has a right to be. Made for children but aimed at clever teens and adults, this movie gets away with having one of the most unlikeable lead characters in a Disney movie, voiced with aplomb by David Spade.
I often find Spade's live action efforts to be a bit grating but animation serves his bravado so well here its a wonder he hasn't achieved more success with voice over work. The show is nearly stolen though by Patrick Warburton, whose vacant yet endearing portrayal of side kick Kronk, has since gone on to define his career and typecast him in similar dumb, yet endearing muscle-headed characters.
Overall, besides a few pacing issues, easily one of my favorite Disney movies.
