Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Kenneth S — 20 Jan 2009
David Lynch's touching biography of John Merrick (The Elephant Man) is a beautiful, wonderfully acted film that gets a bit boring after a while. The film is still very good; it just gets a bit tiring in the second half.
Plus, I knew how it was going to end within the first fifteen minutes. Don't let that turn you away from this film, though, for it bears what I believe to be Anthony Hopkins's best performance, not to mention an unforgettable performance by John Hurt as John Merrick.
The black and white cinematography is breathtaking, and David Lynch still got a touch of his odd mind in the film, which makes it worth experiencing. Also, the costumes are notable, as this is a period piece that doesn't really feel like one.
