Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Thorne W — 07 Jun 2009
Captivating, inspirational, and somewhat painful to watch. While not entirely historically accurate, Lynch's vision of Merrick's life does more than narrate and depict the struggles of a horribly misshapen man in the face of a baffled public, it grabs the audience and forces them to face their darkness as well as humanity's brutality quite like the Night Porter uses his mirror to force Merrick to look upon his terrifying deformity.
The only real problem that I have with the movie has nothing to do with the film itself- where's the DVD release? Who thought it was a good idea to let this masterpiece fall out of print?
