The look of horror mixed with pity on Anthony Hopkins' face when his character first sees the Elephant Man is an outstanding piece of acting. There are also some memorable lines on how it must feel to be disfigured to the point of being a 'freak' or a 'curiosity', as well as questioning the good achieved by seemingly charitable acts.

Probably would have rated this higher if it were not for a few scenes which lacked the subtlety of the rest of the film, e.g. the scene where the drunk voyeurs force their way into Merrick's room or the scenes with Merrick's mother and the elephants.
