Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Aidan B — 13 Mar 2010
David Lynch's second movie, again in black and white. He truly knows how to use it to his advantage and as art. It shows the mood, and keeps us in suspense of what Merrick looks like, utilizing shadows until finally revealing his torso, and then his face.
Most of the movie is dark, showing his mistreatment, and comes around to say that even when he's with people who like him, he's still looked at differently by the majority of people. This leads up to the ending, with emotion and we care about what happens to him and why.
It shows that no matter what, people will look at you differently, and without thinking on God, you will be unhappy. It goes from mentioning the Bible once, to not mentioning it again.
