Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Tom R — 23 May 2012
The Elephant Man is a fairly heartbreaking drama about a sideshow freak and a surgeon who takes pity on him. Some parts are hard to watch not because of the Elephant Man's physical condition, but how others react to him.
It's shot in beautiful black and white, making you feel even more sympathy for the title character. John Hurt's makeup is unbelievably intricate and you have to give credit to the actor for wearing it.
There were a couple of weird (director) David Lynch artistic moments in which I don't know their purpose other than to be analyzed for symbolism (and knowing Lynch, it's probably sexual). But The Elephant Man is one of Lynch's best films and worth viewing.
