Review of The Element of Crime (1984) by Krystof Z — 19 Dec 2009
As a person who normally thinks Von Trier works are brilliant, this one fell FAR short of what I was hoping for. In "Europa", the droning, hypnotic tone is played to mastery. In "The element of crime", it almost puts you to sleep.
(In fact, the first time I tried watching this film, I actually DID fall asleep 20 minutes into it). The plot is so horrendously slow in developing that it's painful to watch. The amber tint makes the entire movie hard to watch, and hard to follow.
I hate to put this into my "dislike" category, especially since I really WANTED to like it....but it's not something that I have any desire whatsoever to watch again.
