Review of The Electric Horseman (1979) by Bob L — 09 Jan 2009
One of my favorites from my teenage years, I watched The Electric Horseman on cable early in 2009. Redford's part stands up well and he is outstanding as the broken down cowboy whose conscience leads him to becoming an unlikely American hero.
The Willie Nelson songs remind me of an era when you could hear some good music on country radio. Surprisingly to me, Fonda's character didn't stand up well to the test of time. Her dress, mannerisms were just non-believable for a TV reporter, at least in this era.
And can we please have people wandering the wilderness look as if they might be a bit disheveled? As always when viewing this film, I loved Wilford Brimley's understated small role. In the end, I'm a sucker for a good love story and director Sydney Pollack delivers that, despite some corniness.
But for me, one line stands out and it's Fonda talking about how she feels as though she is, for the first time, seeing America. Makes even this city boy want to spend some time in the Rockies.
