Review of The Edge of Love (2008) by Chloe D — 27 Jun 2008
It's going to be quite hard to review this without babbling on about the amazing cinema I saw it in. After struggling to find somewhere showing it, I finally found a little indepent cinema which ended up being the best cinema exeprience of my life!
Anyway - VERY VERY glad I went to all the effort to find this film cos I enjoyed it so much. Could kind of see after watching why it had been tucked away at a tiny cinema - whilst it had huge stars in it, it was very very arty and I don't think it would have really worked in the multiplexes.
The score and the cinematography were lush, it is such a beautiful film to watch.
I was blown away by Keira ... stunning, beautiful singing (very impressed with her voice), fantastic Welsh accent .. it really was a fantastic performance. I LOVED the character of Vera, she was so feisty and headstrong and Keira played her perfectly.
Unfortunately Sienna wasn't quite as good, and looked a little poor in comparison - her Irish accent was all over the place. It took me ages to realise it was supposed to be Irish!
The story was spot on - romantic, heartbreaking and it had me reaching for the tissues more than once.
My only slight criticism was that maybe the film needed to focus a bit more on Dylan, it was a bit hard to understand why women were chucking themselves at him when he was being portrayed as a selfish bastard. Maybe a bit more focus on his nicer, tender moments would have been good.
Also the comparisons to Atonement seem unnecessary - it isn't as good, so to compare them just seems wrong. This film should be judged on its own merits and shouldn't be living in the shadow of another film.
