Review of The Edge of Love (2008) by Valerie P — 24 Sep 2010
Not sure what I expected, but this film fell a little short of my hopes. I had wanted to see it because I am a fan of Dylan Thomas poetry. The story is kind of a slow-burner and doesn't build up into anything interesting for at least 45 minutes.
Dylan comes across as the roving partier I expected him to be. His wife is forgiving, yet muddled. The real star of the show is Keira Knightley's character Vera. A childhood friend of Dylan's who gets swept up in his circle of "good times".
By the end, I was invested in what would happen to Vera and her family. This was after struggling through the beginning of the film, however, when I could hardly hear the dialogue despite a rather loud background noise soundtrack.
The lack of music throughout the majority of the film often made it feel a bit stark, but the subject matter was indeed sobering anyhow.
