Review of The Edge of Democracy (2019) by Viniciussawate — 28 May 2021
In Edge of Democracy, Petra Costa's privileged access to the political party's command which yields strong images at the end, in the scenes that remake the hours before the former president's arrest. What persists, however, are the panoramic views of the unoccupied Alvorada, images of an indefinite vacuum, dangerous in the apolitical sense because it registers that space only its ugly side in an unjust country, the ostentation of the big windows, the well-polished floor, the imposing sculptures.
The film claims the protagonism of the story for itself, and looking around it only seems able to see the class privileges it shares.
