Review of The Edge (1997) by Chris A — 04 Aug 2009
This is a pretty bad movie with a terrible script. The characters are hollow with no backstory and the plot is loaded with devices that are poorly developed and don't add to the story. Moreover, this has all the marks of a terrible man-in-nature story: 1) they are told in the beginning how to react when encountering a bear, yet consistently refuse to follow it and often take off running, 2) the homemade compass probably wouldn't work there (magnetic north != true north), but even so, there's no reason they should have ended up walking a circle. The target they were walking toward was a friggin mountain; how do you miss a mountain?? 3) later on the character points out, in a knowledgeable tone, that all they have to do is follow the river to get out of the woods. This is true, but why waste so much time before bringing it up?
Oh yeah, and to no one's surprise, the token black guy dies. It's ok, they never tell us anything about who he is or why he's there anyway, so you saw this coming in the first 5 minutes of the movie.
About the only positive things to say about this movie are 1) some beautiful scenery, 2) hopkins' character takes the moral high ground at the end, and 3) it ended.
