Phenomenally real action picture with two unlikely leads: it remains Hopkins only true action role, and Baldwin effects a camp voice in parts. The title sequence is the best I have ever seen for a multitude of reasons, and the writing, from Mamet's furious pen, is unsurpassed by anyone working in Hollywood today.
The only film better written than this, I think, is Chinatown. Has a devastating final act: if you've bought the rest of it like I did you'll feel the bottom of your stomach drop out at the close.
Yes, only Hopkins could have pulled it off and the finish makes one wonder whether he could have played Gandalf better than McKellen.
