Review of The Edge (1997) by Robert H — 11 Jan 2010
Billionaire goes to Alaska, with various hangers-on. For some reason, he finds himself in a plane crash landing, surviving alongside a photographer and a token black guy.
Anthony Hopkins plays the jaded billionaire in a very understated way. This is a man who has little energy or capacity for joy left. The other characters really only exist to give Hopkins some backdrop.
As thrillers go, this is a decent one, and with a Mamet-penned script, there is a lot in this film that's engaging. There is the kind of admiration for billionaires that could not really be done in a post-credit-crunch world - every scene seems to ooze confidence that billionaires must be the most deserving, capable humans on the planet, to get into that position.
I enjoyed the film, despite some predictability.
