Review of The East (2013) by John C — 10 Jul 2013
A counter-culture, revolutionary group targets major corporations who knowingly damage people's health, wildlife and the environment by, quite literally, giving them a taste of their own medicine: injecting them with their own dangerous drugs and making them drink from the waters they pollute.
In steps a pretty private intelligence officer who infiltrates the group with a view of stopping the so-called terrorist plots and handing over the information to the FBI.
Alas, she grows increasingly drawn to the group's ideology and personnel, in particular the ringleader with whom she falls in love, and as a result her priorities change and her mission becomes muddled.
Verdict: sombre and a tad preachy (though, as Paul Daniels used to say, "not a lot"); but well executed, pacey and thoroughly watchable.
A solid 3/5.
