Review of The East (2013) by Peter O — 19 Jul 2013
The supporting actors did a fine job and the dynamics between them certainly held my interest which speaks well of the director's ability to pull it all together. Terrorism is a story line that seems to be selling well these days and this one is a little different in that it revolves around an environmental theme which is plausible but it was just too easy to single out the bad guys and gals which is where its credibility wore thin.
Brit Marling's character was a bit over the top with her special abilities that came in handy just at the right moment (a.k.a deus ex machina) . This creates awareness in the viewer that there is a puppet master behind the characters.
The entire film left me with the feeling that I was looking at a painting where you could still see the artist's original sketch marks after he laid in the coloring.
