Review of The East (2013) by Nelson D — 23 Aug 2013
I really really liked most of this film. I'll be upfront and say the ending just did not match the greatness before it, hence I docked it a star.
But I like how they set up that there are many cells all over the country getting back at the rich types making a mint off the suffering of others. They pull a few jobs, and then move on it seems. I think the first one we see is a different group, but we are introduced to this particular cell through Marling, as she is a spy sent in to get information on them.
She was really great here, but the entire cast was awesome. I also really liked Kebbell as Doc.
I liked that the first two jobs are relatable as two of the group actually have something at stake in who they are going after.
The film is smart, topical and has a nice sense that you, as with Marling, will probably start to side with these 'American Terrorists' at some point, seeing a world that really needs to change.
I just wish the last job wasn't so lame. I kept waiting for it to blow me away, and then the movie just ends.
Marling is really an actress to watch the last few years. Big things should come with her!
