Review of The Duellists (1977) by Rajneel S — 20 Jun 2009
Although the episodic nature of the film turns the story into an extended and almost crawling character study, Ridley Scott's first feature film saves itself from its meager reinterpretation of Joseph Conrad's short story thanks to the talented director's remarkable background in directing over 200 television commercials.
Simply put this film gives an early indicator of what's to come from the master Englishman - novel storytelling concepts, sense-barraging imagery, palpable, thick atmosphere, historical accuracy to the nth degree and - quite simply - some of the most stunning, jaw-dropping, eyeball-orgasm-delivering, "how did they do that" cinematography ever put to 35mm film.
Without the tricks of CGI or special equipment, Scott relies on his vast and formidable experience to bring a version of the 18th Century to life that, prior, has only ever been captured in the paintings of the old masters.
While the slow and introspective nature of the plot may turn away idle viewers, fans of the historical period and fans of cinema should definitely treat yourself to the experience of this movie - preferably in the largest screen and highest resolution you can find.
Wow.
