Review of The Driver (1978) by Adam C — 24 May 2010
The Driver is the kind of action film that is low on plot or character but high on atmosphere and mood. The film's plot seems to be very loose and really doesn't seem very plausible, but this is a film where the action carries most of the film.
Walter Hill is the kind of director that is very good at making a film like this. It is a visually pleasing and a wild action film that was not to dissimilar to Hill's great film The Warriors. Ryan O'Neal is good here in an almost silent role as the hero but the real show stealer is Bruce Dern.
Dern is wonderfully slimy as a crooked cop and is very fun to watch at work here. The film is a flawed to be sure, with a few plots holes and an anti-climactic ending. Still the exceptional car chases, good performances, and heavy atmosphere makes this film a stylish yet brainless entertainment.
