Review of The Double Life of Véronique (1991) by Daniel A — 13 Sep 2011
No, it doesn't make complete sense, but something about The Double Life of Veronique keeps you engaged in the narrative, which will leave many feeling mystified by its unexplained coincidences and poetic storytelling.
As such it's better to let the film wash over you, drinking in the beautiful cinematography and Irene Jacob's impressive performance, rather than nitpick every potential flaw in the story. It's clear that this movie has influenced other prominent works such as Amelie and Being John Malkovich, and like both of those films, The Double Life of Veronique feels very fresh and unique in its style and execution.
Hence this is a must-see for those who enjoy original storytelling and aren't afraid of abstract cinema.
