Review of The Double Life of Véronique (1991) by David F — 05 Jul 2015
I first saw this film on the CBC which presented art house and foreign films every Friday night and it entranced me like no other film I'd ever seen. The story of two women, one Polish, one French, both played by Irene Jacob in an award-winning performance which is perfect for these roles, is all mood and atmosphere, created through great acting, beautiful music and gorgeous cinematography.
It can be difficult to maintain the interest of the audience when there is no plot but it only makes things like character and visuals and soundtrack that much more important to sustain the interest and when these elements are transcendent, as they are here, you end up with a masterpiece, which is what this is.
