Review of The Double (2014) by Liam C — 08 May 2014
When this started I was terrified, not to say Jesse Eisenberg is a bad actor but he has his thing where he talks very fast and acts kind of shy and I thought the whole dual role thing wouldn't be very good but, of course, I was wrong and I am glad I was because he nailed both roles in the movie.
It's unlike Enemy even though the concepts are the same, I felt like I had to watch both of these within a space of a day just because but they're both very different. The Double has a very, very dark surreal tone to it and it has more of a narrative structure than Enemy but I won't compare them that much from now on.
The Double felt like it was taking place in another world and felt like a movie from 20 years ago, the sudden silences, the music, the Dutch angles. People have spoken about similarities to Eraserhead and Brazil and while I see where they're coming from this is an original film all its own.
I find it amazing how a critic could review something like objectively and the fact that it has very high scoring reviews, like Enemy, they're both very 'out there' films for a lack of a better term.
You can just sit down and score it out of five and say this was good and that wasn't (ironic because I'm going to give it a score) but it's a movie you go away and think about, not any old movie you could rate out of 5.
It's a very paranoid dark thriller that gets under your skin for awhile and it was very, very well made. Credit to the great performances and the surprising director.
