Review of The Double (2014) by Cj C — 10 May 2014
This is an interesting film in every way. Simon (Jesse Eisenberg) is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams.
He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new co-worker, James (also Jesse Eisenberg), serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon's exact physical double and his opposite - confident, charismatic and good with women.
To Simon's horror, James slowly starts taking over his life. It is slow moving which will put some off but I felt it was really well made. However Jesse Eisenberg probably prevented this from being a film that gets rated higher mainly due to the fact he portrays both characters in pretty much the same way.
All in all a very intriguing, solid film that I very much enjoyed but also could have been even better.
