Review of The Double (2014) by Gavin P — 03 Nov 2014
As much as I want to like Ayoade as a director - and 'Submarine' was OK, if a little Wes Anderson-lite - this is trying too hard to be a noir-ish Romeo & Juliet, which is a bad thing. Nothing worked - slow, boring, depressing, so many wasted scenes & shots of flashing lights & shadows, annoying violin playing instead of actual dialogue or emotion.
Eisenberg tries but doesn't have enough chance to be funny (how is this listed as a "comedy!?) and Wasikowska, Taylor and O'Dowd are wasted. Poor sophomore effort...
