Review of The Doors (1991) by Hunter D — 08 Sep 2008
Like most biopics Oliver Stone cooks up, he opts to go with legend over reality. While Val Kilmer was damn interesting in the role of Jim Morrison, I never felt like I knew who Jim Morrison was after watching this film.
To me, he was portrayed as a whimsical alcoholic and drug addict who did a lot of crazy shit and happened to make good music. I never got why Morrison was obsessed with Native American culture, or why he wrote his lyrics, or why he was batshit insane the whole time, apart from his drug abuse.
There is no insight provided here, and a movie like this should help people understand why he is important, rather than just hoping you assume he is before you walk in and see his "life" unfold before you.
What I did enjoy about this movie was the filmmaking itself, as I did feel like I was on a big, long acid trip while I was watching it, and I was entertained by what I was seeing. But like the end of a crazy drug binge, I wish I didn't feel so empty when the credits started rolling.
