Review of The Doors (1991) by Kyle H — 30 Jul 2009
Oliver Stone did it to me again. When I started watching this movie, I didn't think it could be worth more than 3 stars at most. And since music biopics are usually OK (provided you like the music - which I knew I did in this case), I thought 3 stars would be my rating of this movie.
But as I watched, I started to value it higher and higher. Oliver Stone manages to treat every subject with such intensity, whatever it is, that it just grabs the viewer. Even though this (long) film is no more than a continuation of Morrison's adventures as a rock star, living in a world of his own, driven by sex, drugs, alcohol and other such cliches, with the predictable ending in which the bubble bursts inevitably, it never gets boring.
And this is remarkable, given the fact we already knew the basics about Morrison.
