Review of The Doom Generation (1995) by Marc B — 03 Apr 2011
I've never encountered a film maker so challenged by reviewers who just "don't get it." So many of the bad reviews of his work start with statements that wave flags that read "I have no comprehension of what I just watched." They say things like "The most childish dialogue Ive ever seen" " Vapid characters." and even better "What's the point of this movie?" It's not even like Araki's films are subtle, and one can think it's easy to misunderstand the dry humor, bitter sarcasm, or heaven forbid, the irony. It couldn't be any more in your face, could it? Perhaps that would be a welcome critique of his work, but sadly it never happens.
Sometimes the point is, there is no point! Shit! That's Araki's place of departure. It only gets more satirically complicated from there (only it isn't that complicated at all really). If you can't even wrap your head around that idea...
