Review of The Doom Generation (1995) by Rob L — 02 May 2012
This film has been described by Time Out as â~Natural Born Killers with humourâ(TM) and itâ(TM)s a fair description, especially as it reeks of the California of the 90s â" a pastiche of the work of messrs Rodriguez, Tarantino and Linklater. That said, itâ(TM)s a work of juvenilia (in every sense of the word) when compared to Arakiâ(TM)s later masterpiece, Mysterious Skin.
Schlocky in the extreme, itâ(TM)s less explicit than one might expect and shows the confidence that Araki possessed in his early days. There are gay themes but the directorâ(TM)s description of the piece as â~a heterosexual movieâ(TM) is pretty accurate. Not really worth going out of your way for.
