Review of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) by Stefan N — 20 Jun 2013
"Le Scaphandre et le Papillon" is the reason we watch movies. It is about the Jean-Dominic-Baby's life after his stroke which paralyzed his body completely except for his left eye. He blinked 200, 000 times to write the novel that Julian Schnabel gloriously adapts.
The actors are so good that it feels like a documentary especially Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Seigner. The idea to make it a POV movie is genius and is executed by Janus Kaminski with elements of beauty and reality.
Its not depressing but more like a subtle message of hope. The score and soundtrack is miraculously well suited. People argue that it is melodramatic, but I argue that all the characters are too real for the film to be melodramatic.
Few films feel like poems, but "Le Scaphandre et le Papillon" is a true gem in modern cinema.
