Review of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) by Stephan S — 19 Feb 2010
What a powerful story! The film takes the viewers through the perspective of Jean-Dominique Bauby, and feels as imprisoned in the diving bell as he is. However, his imagination and memory soar like a butterfly past his paralyzed state.
After a while, it's easy to forget his paralysis by how well he "communicates." His mental thoughts keep the story going, which I find entertaining. The cinematography perfectly characterizes how Jean-Dominique views the world around him.
While the plot drags slightly, this is the best foreign language film I've ever seen - both artistically and thematically.
