Review of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) by Tara S — 29 Apr 2010
Pretty sad story. it has alot of symbolism and optimism in it. the ladies of his life were all casted very well, and the cinematography and decision to make it half 1st perspective and 3rd perspective through different tricks and lenses was really good.
it ended really abruptly though, and to be honest, too soon for its own good. it just felt like a lazy ending. I was really impressed with Emmanuelle Seigner and Anne Consigny. they really carried the film and were the main reasons that Jean-Do could do what he did.
His life seemed tragic but I couldn't really connect with him. It was typical seeing how "high fly" he was pre-accident, but once after, he saw life in a totally different light and felt bitter, and spiteful of god, no doubt.
typical. Julian Schnabel definitely did a good job directing, but nothing visual or story-wise stands out. its a touching story, with good acting, not sure anything else. it has a good message. and having seen interviews of Schnabel, he seems to have made this film as a therapeutic means to end his pain for his father which is interesting.
..don't think I would say I was dissapointed it didn't win much at the 2008('07 movies) oscars. not much stood out to give it so. nevertheless, good.
