Review of The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them (2014) by Xin W — 02 Dec 2014
Whoever allowed the line "one of the most romantic love stories ever" on the poster... this surely is NOT a romantic movie. it is much more a story about the difficulties of relationships, and an impressive one at that.
The characters are refreshingly flawed, and the way in which mcavoy and chastain act out the ways in which they tackle their problems and their grief, are stunning to watch. it is also great to see that benson gives his characters room and space for silence and does not try to heighten emotional moments by playing dramatic (and annoying) background music.
The movie surely follows in linklater's steps of before sunset and before sunrise (and is a better movie than the latest installment before midnight), and is an almost (but only almost) as impressive experiment as linklater's boyhood, showing the same events from different perspectives of both him and her.
