The Disappearance of Alice Creed is one of the best thrillers I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of thrillers. It's just simple enough to follow, but complicated enough - certainly when it comes to the psychology of the characters and their own machinations - that it doesn't disappoint or feel stale at any point. Any time there is a lull in the plot, it's always carefully constructed to propel the story back into action as quickly as it possibly can. The performances here are exactly what they need to be. Gemma Arterton plays Alice Creed, a kidnapping victim, as the perfect blend of victim and perpetrator. She's not exactly clever, but she knows this, just like she knows how pathetic and lowly she is or at least how pathetic and lowly other characters think she is. Her captors are played by Martin Compston and Eddie Marsan, two men whose relationship is mostly suggestion and implication in all the best possible ways.
Why can't all thrillers be this fucking good?
