Review of The Dirty Dozen (1967) by Jeff Q — 11 Dec 2007
I really have mixed emotions reviewing this film. I suppose, the proper way to review an older film is to take into account the era the film was made. More often than not, maybe we should cut older films some "slack".
I really try not to do that. I review films with present day sensibilities and don't apologize (usually). Still, some of my favorite films (Night of the Living Dead, Apoc. Now, The Evil Dead, etc.
) have stood the test of time perfectly. The Dirty Dozen is a film that I really have a hard time with. I can tell that this is a great film, with great dialogue, a great cast, and a fine script. But, I just can't get beyond how slow the film feels and at times how dated it has become from a direction standpoint.
I kinda hate myself for it, but I'm only giving The Dirty Dozen a 6.
