It may be a classic men-on-a-mission-movie, but there's a good deal more depth than the swaggering macho legend suggests. The characters are beautifully drawn and very well performed, and the anti-authoritarian humour of the first hour means the innevitably tragic bravado of the final mission is all the more powerful.
