Review of The Dirty Dozen (1967) by Michael D — 12 Aug 2010
An influential movie and perhaps the very first action blockbuster, light on plot and heavy on preposterous situations, which is basically the whole movie from beginning to end.
However, the climatic act is so crazy and over-the-top with endless shooting, explosions, and death dealing to both the Americans and the Germans (as well as innocent people) that I felt some sort of nihilistic, dark humored genius at work and the film was ultimately worth the viewing.
Reportedly, the film's director, Robert Aldrich, refused to cut down the violent scenes and explained his choice with the quote "war is hell." Quite right, Mr. Aldrich, quite right.
