Review of The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) by The Critic ( — 08 Apr 2013
A beautifully photographed production based on the writings of Anne Frank over a two-year period. The story is primarily about hope and faith in the human spirit, depicting that the extraordinary things (both good and bad) that people to do to and for one another.
The film, perhaps, offers a more romanticised depiction of her relationship with Peter van Daan, but dramatically works to reflect her gradual maturation.
Running for a staggering 170 minutes, this is a consistently compelling piece with solid performances across the board. Millie Perkins is charming as Anne, Gusti Huber is particularly solid as her mother Edith, handsome Richard Beymer makes a suitable romantic counterpart and Shelley Winters is also in fine form (rewarded with a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her efforts).
