Review of The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) by Scot C — 30 Aug 2015
"The Diary of a Teenage Girl" features a precocious, highly sexually driven teenage girl living in 1970's San Francisco who is on a quest to explore her sexuality. She is candid that she needs the warm caress of another body and unabashedly subscribes to her promiscuous life style.
One could go so far as to call her a nymphomaniac given her liberal choice of partners. She has a sexual tryst with her mother's boyfriend, a boy from school, and even a female pothead. What I can say about this movie is that it unabashedly addresses teen angst and sexuality and presents a candid, unprecedented look at a girl's desires who is going through puberty and craves intimacy with another person.
While some may find the subject matter and premise disturbing, i.e. rape, I thought the film was bold in how colorfully and shamelessly it portrayed this girl's sexuality and sense of self. More coming of age films should be this candid and honest.
It is not something to shy away from, but rather this girl embraces it and is open about what she wants. The caricature she is portrayed as may be objectionable to some people, but I think more movies need to be this honest about their subject matter.
This movie captures what many directors are afraid to say ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B+.
